    Signs that You Need

    To Repair Your Water Softener

Keeping Your Water Softener Running Smoothly!

It can be challenging for some home and business owners to determine when your water softener system needs repairs. Several tell-tale signs can point to your system needing repairs. Below, we’ve outlined a few of these signs that you need to look out for.

    Scale Buildup

Scale is a chalky mineral deposit caused by the minerals in hard water that can form in your pipes. If you notice this chalky substance on your dishes, around your faucets, or in your appliances, you’re probably dealing with hard water. This means that your water softener isn’t working correctly and should be checked out for repairs.

    Dry Skin & Hair

Hard water has an adverse effect on your hair and skin. The mineral deposits in hard water can dry out your hair and skin, leaving it feeling itchy and looking ashy. This can even exacerbate certain pre-existing skin conditions. If you notice these effects on your hair or skin, you should consider having your water softener system looked at for repairs.

    Faded & Scratchy Laundry

The same as hard water dries out your skin and hair, it dries out the fabric. This can lead to laundry that looks grayed or faded, clothes and bedding that feel scratchy. If you notice this happening to the materials around your home or business, then hard water is making its way past your water softener, and you should have it serviced soon to ensure it’s working properly.
Common Repairs for Water Softener Systems

The three most common issues we run into with water softeners.

There are several issues that can prevent your water softener from doing its job correctly. Some of these issues are more common than others. Below, we’ve narrowed down the three most common malfunctions that we repair on both residential and commercial water softening systems.

    Brine Valve Repairs

Brine valves are made of brass, and unfortunately, salt is corrosive to brass. Not to mention, almost all water supply systems in the U.S. disinfect public water with chlorine. Chlorine can wear down the rubber seals that stop the water’s flow through the piston whenever the brine valve is not in use. To combat this issue, some manufacturers attempted to use plastic brine valves, although they discovered that brass still performed better, despite the salt and chlorine’s corrosive nature. When this happens, our team can replace the valve or seals to correct this problem for you.

    Piston Repairs

Though not as common as valve repairs, it’s not uncommon for a piston to go bad in your system. The piston is used to move the water in and out of the tanks in your water softener as needed. In some cases, these can bread due to a foreign object, such as a rock, finds its way into your water supply. This object can break the piston as it enters the resin tank with the hard water to be softened. A broken piston is a repair that any of our team members can complete for you promptly.

    Distributor Repairs

The last repair on the list is much less common than the first two, but can still happen nonetheless. This repair is a broken distributor. The distributor keeps the resin beads in the resin tank from flowing into the waterline with the softened water. These parts can break due to excessive water pressure, not regenerating your system frequently enough, or even because of highly chlorinated water breaking down the resin beads into small fragments. If you experience a broken distributor, we can diagnose and repair it in no time!

    Why repair your water softener

    Instead of replacing it?

You may be on the fence about repairing your water softener. You may be thinking, “Why not just replace it?” There are several reasons you should look into fixing your water softener system before jumping into a replacement. In most cases, a water softener’s problem is basic and doesn’t take much to be repaired. If you decide to replace your softener before looking into repairs, you could be throwing out a perfectly usable device. The overall longevity of a water softener is mostly dependant on the hardness of your water. However, on average, most water softeners will last between 10 and 15 years before needing replacement. If your system is within that age range, you should always have it checked for repairs before opting to replace it with a newer system. It’s true that repairing any type of system can only work for so long before it outlives its usefulness. That said, there are some easy ways to tell if a replacement is more viable than a repair. If a repair will not extend your system’s lifespan much longer, if you are repeatedly having to call for repairs, or if you want to update an outdated model with a more modern design, a replacement may be the better option. In any case, our company can handle all of your water softener needs, from installation to repairs to replacements!
